ZMS SCHWANDORF
THE VISION OF A BUILT LANDSCAPE

The new construction of the administration building for the Zweckverband Müllverwertung Schwandorf (ZMS) and the related noise protection embankment was designed by architects as a „built landscape “. The project, consisting of an earth embankment, office wing, and assembly hall, represented a special task for the structural planning because of the complex geometry and the high design requirements. In combination with the sculptural shape, the development of innovative solutions became necessary.

The 140m office wing is completed as a single-storey reinforced concrete solid structure integrated in the up to 12m high and 450m long earth embankment. The dynamic form of the assembly hall develops out of the embankment and sits on a reinforced concrete table. Prefabricated cambered glue-laminated timber girders were selected as structure for the double curvilineal roof. The girders facilitated the perfect construction of the free-form roof with its tight radiuses. As a visible construction, it simultaneously also provides an exciting view from below in the assembly hall.
