DVG HANNOVER
A PATENTED STRUCTURAL SYSTEM FOR UNDULATING ROOFS

The company FinanzIT (formerly known as Datenverarbeitungsgesellschaft dvg) completed the construction of their new building not far from the trade fair and exhibition site in Hanover at the turn of this century. The administration building stretches over a length of 380m on a triangular site. Six terraced combs extend from a four storey longitudinal block decreasing in length to end at the southern edge as single storeys. The entire building complex is covered by a wave-shaped glass roof which is interrupted in two places by courtyards.

The project is a convincing example for holistic planning of architecture and technology.

LAUDATIO - EXCERPT

The shape of the glass roof could be developed according to the architect’s specification with the help of rules for sequences applied to translation form finding. A structural characteristic which permitted arbitrary columns and shell-edge forming and did not interfere with the form finding through strict boundary conditions was necessary.

For this reason, our patented Triax system was the solution for the implementation. The Triax system proved to be the most cost effective alternative in a tough competition. The system consists of steel modules which are essentially all the same and in combination with a cable net become load-bearing. Each Triax consists of two crossed round tubes (ø 133 mm), forming the upper chords, and four vertical posts (ø 76.1 mm) which connect the cable net (ø 20 mm) to the upper chord level.
