The table construction forms the intercept level and consists of two plates, one above the other, connected at the edges by inclined plates. This results in a very effective structural system in which the upper plate is exposed to tensile force and the other discs are exposed to pressure. By using semi-finished parts, the table structure could be produced very economically and in a short time despite its complexity.
THE BUTCHER’S TRADE FRESHLY SERVED UP
The Fleischerschule in Augsburg, dating from the 1970s, was rebuilt and extended by a new building with workshops, living quarters, administration, lecture halls, and a canteen. The new construction was placed on top of the existing two-storey building like a table, thereby avoiding any complex interventions into the existing building. The load capacity of the four-storey cube with a ground-plan dimension of von 25m x 25m was reduced via the self-supporting concrete table construction on four large columns in an 11m x 11m grid. Their foundation was achieved with bored piles in direct proximity to the existing foundations.
